She graduated from the production management course, where she developed her producing portfolio by assisting Mike Goodridge on Jessica Hausner’s new film, Club Zero (2023) and producer Kurban Kassam on Amazon’s pioneering drill-music-Shakespeare-esque epic Jungle (2022). However, when the pandemic hit, Jen returned to the UK to start a career in the Western Industry. She also produced sold-out comedy nights and began a run of Shakespeare-adapted-plays in Shenzhen. She produced a sell-out run of Rodgers and Hammerstien’s Cinderella the Musical, and following on from that was backed by the Chinese Government to run a tour of South China. Whilst working for ABCTime in Shenzhen, she developed and took to screen a children’s television show, whilst also founding a theatre company. Having started her journey as a children’s television presenter in mainland China, she soon learned behind the camera is where her strengths were. You can find a list of producers we connected with in the past, either by organising script calls for them or searching our database of scripts to find projects matching their taste. Please note we mainly engage with producers based in the UK and the USA, but many of them are accepting international projects. ![]() ![]() Several of them work as executives at top production companies while developing a personal slate as individuals. They usually have solid credits under their belt, or they have ongoing relationships with funding bodies such as the BFI, Film4, BBC Films, or they have gone through international talent schemes such as Berlinale Talents and BAFTA Connect. We select our producers carefully, picking up the ones with a reasonable chance of success. Ideally, we would love you to find a life-long producing partner, so that you can grow and develop your career together. Although we have the occasional executive working at a bigger production company, we mainly focus on independent and up-and-coming producers who are more likely to engage with new writers. So, here are the highest-grossing independent films from each year of the 2010s.We collaborate with independent producers who are interested in reading new voices. ![]() Indie films have grown to be more appealing to wider movie-going audiences over the last decade or so, and they have even made decent money at the box office. Generally speaking, an independent film is a movie that is produced by an independent studio, however, it can be distributed theatrically by a major studio. Defining what constitutes a film as independent grows more difficult as studios continue to form mergers or are bought out by larger studios. Indie cinema has cultivated a connotation with artistic or experimental storytelling because independent films allow the filmmakers full creative control of each project, unlike big studio films which usually interfere with the creative process.įilms that are character-driven, experiment with filmmaking styles, and provoke meaningful thoughts are usually described as "indie," but the atmosphere isn't the only element that makes a film independent. Blumhouse and Annapurna both have distribution contracts with Universal and MGM respectively, but they produce their films on their own. A24 and Neon have made huge waves in the indie film community and operate solely on their own. Studios such as A24, Neon Entertainment, Blumhouse Productions, and Annapurna Pictures are some of the more recognizable independent studios. Plenty of studios and production companies are owned by major studios and plenty of studios are not independent, but simply aren't as big or as recognizable by general audiences. Every movie that is produced by a studio or production company that is not one of the Big Five is not automatically an independent film. Up until the Disney-Fox merger, 20th Century Fox was the sixth. The Big Five are the major studios, and chances are you already know all five Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Walt Disney Pictures, and Columbia Pictures. These films are made by smaller studios that don't have the capital access that large studios have, such as the Big Five. The basic definition of an independent film is a film that is produced without the financial backing of a major studio. People use it to describe a genre of movie or the feeling a movie invokes, rather than what it actually is. The term "indie film" or "independent movie" gets tossed around rather aimlessly and without any real explanation.
